This website is for Ms. Matthews and Mr. Sullivan's 5th grade class at Carpenter Elementary School in Cary, North Carolina. Students in work collaboratively to master all of the Common Core Standards. Students are encouraged to be independent, creative, self motivated learners! We strive to be like C.A.R.Y. and utilize the 4 C's daily.
In reading, we work individually on comprehension strategies in novel studies and skills groups. Texts are selected within each child’s individual level.
In writing, we have a prominent focus on expository writing. We cover persuasive, procedural, feature stories, news articles, and research papers to name a few.
In mathematics, our curriculum centers on the Common Core standards and covers 9 units:

Wherever possible, we integrate project based learning and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics including the Engineering design process.)
